BENGALURU. Travelling to and from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) could become more challenging for Bengaluru commuters over the next 18 months as construction of a four-lane elevated corridor begins along Ballari Road.

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) commenced the project on November 6, 2026, along the stretch between the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Staff Quarters and Mehkri Circle.

In anticipation of traffic congestion during construction, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have introduced restrictions on vehicle movement along the affected section.

Under the new traffic arrangements, all goods vehicles, including light, medium and heavy goods vehicles, have been prohibited from using the restricted stretch. The movement of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and private buses has also been barred.

Cars, two-wheelers and school buses can continue to use the road, according to the traffic advisory reported by The News Minute.

The restrictions are expected to affect commuters travelling between Hebbal, central Bengaluru and Kempegowda International Airport. Even emergency vehicles have been advised to use designated alternative routes.

Alternative Routes for Airport-Bound Commuters

The Bengaluru Traffic Police have announced alternative routes for motorists travelling towards Kempegowda International Airport.

From central Bengaluru towards the airport:

Commuters travelling through Hebbal have been advised to use the following route:

Old High Grounds Junction → Kalpana Junction → Old Udaya TV Junction → Cantonment Railway Station → Tannery Road → Nagawara Road → Kempegowda International Airport.

From Yeshwanthpur towards the airport:

Vehicles should take Mattikere Road, turn right at BEL Circle and continue along Ring Road towards the international airport.

Alternative Routes from the Airport to Central Bengaluru

Passengers returning from Kempegowda International Airport can use the following alternative routes to reach central Bengaluru.

Route 1: Via Nagawara Junction

Vehicles should take a left turn at Hebbal, proceed towards Nagawara Junction, take a right turn and continue through Bamboo Bazaar and Queens Road towards central Bengaluru.

Route 2: Via Hebbal Ring Road

Motorists can take a right turn at Hebbal and proceed through Hebbal Ring Road, Kuvempu Circle and Goraguntepalya Junction. From there, they should turn left and continue along Dr Rajkumar Road towards the city.

Diversions for Hebbal, RT Nagar and Yeshwanthpur

The traffic police have also announced specific routes for commuters travelling between Hebbal and nearby residential areas.

  • Hebbal to Bengaluru city: After descending the Hebbal Flyover, motorists should enter the service road in front of Baptist Hospital and continue towards CBI Junction. They can then proceed towards the city via Ballari Main Road.
  • Hebbal to Anand Nagar and RT Nagar: Vehicles should use the service road in front of Baptist Hospital, proceed towards Anand Nagar Cross and take a left turn at CBI Junction to join Anand Nagar Main Road. The route continues towards RT Nagar and Jayamahal Road.
  • Yeshwanthpur to central Bengaluru: Commuters should proceed via BHEL Junction, turn right near Maramma Circle, and continue along Margosa Road.

Details of the Elevated Corridor Project

The elevated corridor will cover approximately 1.6 kilometres between UAS Staff Quarters and Mehkri Circle.

The project has been awarded to Hyderabad-based Auro Infra Pvt Ltd at a reported cost of approximately ₹420 crore. Construction is scheduled to take 18 months.

The corridor forms part of a larger infrastructure development plan intended to improve traffic movement around the busy Hebbal junction and strengthen connectivity between northern Bengaluru, central parts of the city and the international airport.

The broader Hebbal infrastructure project also includes other road-improvement components, including a proposed short tunnel and changes to the junction layout.

Commuters Advised to Plan Their Journeys

With Ballari Road serving as one of the major routes connecting Bengaluru with Kempegowda International Airport, the restrictions are expected to affect thousands of daily commuters, airport passengers and transport operators.

Motorists travelling to catch flights have been advised to check the latest traffic updates, follow the designated diversions and allow additional time for their journeys, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

The next 18 months will be an important period for traffic management around Hebbal. Timely completion of the elevated corridor and effective implementation of the diversion plan will be essential to minimise inconvenience to residents and travellers.

For now, commuters are advised to follow Bengaluru Traffic Police instructions and check for any changes to the announced routes before starting their journeys.
