RAJBIRAJ: Women from rural communities in Saptari district are finding seasonal business opportunities by selling traditional earthen lamps in Rajbiraj Bazaar ahead of the Deepawali festival.
Women from villages including Pathargadha, Kochabakhari, Lalapatti, Koiladi Basain and Patol have started bringing baskets of handmade lamps to the local market.
Some sellers carry between 500 and 1,000 lamps at a time, visiting residential areas, market streets and crossroads to find customers.
According to local seller Pikki Pandit of Pathargadha, the lamps are sold at prices ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 500 per hundred, depending on their size and quality.
The seasonal business provides additional income for rural households and helps women meet everyday family expenses.
For many sellers, the work is also a way of preserving traditional skills and keeping local craftsmanship alive.
Demand for earthen lamps generally increases during Deepawali, when households use them to decorate homes and courtyards.
The activity shows how traditional products and festival markets can create small economic opportunities for women in rural communities.
